About the RTC
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is a regional entity that oversees public transportation, traffic management, roadway design and construction funding, transportation planning and regional planning efforts known as Southern Nevada Strong.
The RTC is passionate about Southern Nevada, from our Board of Commissioners to our Executive Team to our dedicated network of contractors and public/private partnerships. We are committed to bringing efficient, reliable solutions to the complex needs that make our desert community special.
We work for you, the public. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, we look forward to sharing with you our role in making Southern Nevada stronger than ever before.
RTC Goals
Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the transportation system and air quality by managing congestion;
Enhance mobility by improving transportation choices and facilitating multi-modal connectivity;
Increase safety for both motorized and non-motorized users;
Maintain and improve transportation system infrastructure;
Support regional planning efforts to improve economic vitality and education and invest in complete communities;
Secure funding for expansion, operation, and maintenance of systems and routes; and
Enhance public awareness and support of the regional transportation system.
As the Las Vegas Valley’s population continues to increase daily, so too does traffic congestion. RTC identifies transportation challenges and explores and implements both short and long-term resolutions while simultaneously promoting sustainability, air quality improvement, enhanced mobility and increased quality of life in the region.
History
The regional government agency originated from a 1965 state statute and 16 years later, in 1981, the RTC was named the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Southern Nevada. As the region’s MPO, the agency is responsible to state and federal governments for maintaining a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive (3-C) transportation planning process ensuring that transit plans and programs involve public input and recommendations and conform to approved air quality standards.

This humble venture evolved into Greyhound Lines, an iconic brand synonymous with affordable and reliable long-distance bus travel in North America.

Environmental Efficiency
Las Vegas Monorail carries nearly 5 million people every year. Additionally, the Monorail carries an average of 67,000 passengers during citywide trade shows, which would equal 22,334 taxi trips per show.
The Las Vegas Monorail system is 100 percent electric and runs zero-emission trains, reducing emissions by more than 27 tons and more than 2 million vehicle miles annually in Southern Nevada! The Monorail uses regenerative braking, which works by storing excess energy that accumulates when train cars are slowed, saving up to 20 percent of the system’s energy.
Annually, the Las Vegas Monorail improves our environment by eliminating an estimated 2.1 million vehicle miles from Southern Nevada’s major roadways. 2.1 million miles is equal to more than 9 trips to the moon.
