The Police Employee Assistance Program or PEAP for short, was started in September 1984 by Detective Ed Jensen and then Lieutenant Jerry Keller, who later became the fourth sheriff of LVMPD.
They felt it was critical to respond to the scene of a shooting, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide immediate emotional support to the involved officers.
Since 1984 the PEAP focus has expanded to include those stressors that are unique to law enforcement. Det. Jensen and Lt. Keller realized that both civilian and commissioned employees experienced stressors that affected their ability to work.
Together they began to wonder just what it was about the law enforcement job and lifestyle that resulted in high rates of divorce, heart disease, alcoholism and suicide.
In law enforcement we are trained to handle everything except our own emotions. In the past, employees who experienced critical incidents were expected to accept it as part of the job, returned to work and functioned normally as if nothing ever happened.
This "stuff it" method of handling emotions revolves around the theory that "if I can't see it then I won't feel it either" and this method works for a little while. In 2023, the PEAP program transitioned into the Peer Support Program under the Wellness Bureau

To serve those who serve and protect those who protect; this is the charge of the police chaplain. We invite you to join us as a volunteer, or partner with us as an agency leader. There is work to be done and we are ready.
See the Need: Law enforcement officers regularly encounter fatal accidents, violent crime, and domestic abuse, yet their resulting depression and stress often goes untreated due to the stigma around seeking support. The very independence, fortitude, and self-reliance that make a soul fit for law enforcement service, renders him or her more susceptible to its long-term effects.
See the Good: Chaplaincy is as crucial as it is uncomplicated. The call of the chaplain is simply the call to see the good. As volunteers who exist outside the command structure, yet hold themselves accountable to agency leadership, chaplains are uniquely positioned to lead by example. In every situation, in every crisis, in every moment, chaplains are there solely to support without judgment, to normalize positivity and resilience, and to be a reminder of the goodness and humanity that can be obscured in times of extremity.
Join the ICPC: The ICPC is a global family of individuals dedicated to supporting those who serve on the front lines. Ours is a ministry of presence—proactively walking alongside officers through critical incidents, offering guidance to their families, and championing wellness practices that remove the stigma associated with seeking and receiving help.

BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST
Second Baptist Church continues to reach for higher ground in its ministry and service to others. She started an Outreach Ministry eleven years ago and continues to provide food, clothing, and other amenities to the needy, homeless and many others who have fallen on hard times.
Seeing the lack of worship times to better accommodate the various schedules of many people in Las Vegas, Second Baptist became the first African-American congregation to begin an early morning worship service. To build upon the evangelistic charge of “meeting the people where they are”, the worship service began a live radio broadcast dedicated to those individuals who were sick, shut-in or unable to attend a church for regular fellowship. Even today, listeners can tune in on Sunday mornings from 8:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. to KCEP FM 88 for a spiritual uplifting.
REMEMBERING THE PAST - LIVING THE PRESENT - MOVING TOWARDS THE FUTURE
We praise God with love and thanksgiving for the privilege of reaching another milestone in our rich spiritual history. Those that have built the foundation are remembered with honor for leading, teaching, and praying for us. We stand on the foundation of the Holy Scriptures. We will continue to love one another with Agape love. We will remain diligent in our prayer life, continually seeking our Heavenly Father’s guidance in all endeavors.
